NordVPN vs ExpressVPN vs Surfshark: Which VPN Should You Choose in 2026?

NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark all publish strong privacy claims, modern VPN protocols, and independent audit material. Their meaningful differences are device limits, network design, feature packaging, and the amount you may pay across the full subscription term.

This comparison uses documented provider information available on May 1, 2026, with vendor figures refreshed at editorial review in October 2026. It does not include first-hand speed tests, and it does not treat an audit as proof that a service can never fail.

How we evaluated#

We compared the same six areas for each VPN:

  1. Published security architecture, including protocols, kill-switch controls, and server storage design.
  2. Independent reviews of no-logs claims, infrastructure, protocols, or applications.
  3. Advertised country coverage as of the article date, without treating raw server totals as a performance score.
  4. Simultaneous device limits.
  5. Published support and refund policies.
  6. Total subscription cost, including the initial term, renewal conditions, bundle requirements, and the number of subscriptions a household may need.

Provider-run speed claims were not used to rank the services. Actual VPN speed depends on the device, protocol, server load, route, distance, and local connection.

1. NordVPN — best overall security balance#

NordVPN combines its NordLynx protocol with RAM-only servers, a kill switch, private DNS, and specialty options that include Double VPN, obfuscated servers, and Onion Over VPN. Its no-logs position had completed six independent assurance reviews by the article date, with the latest Deloitte work examining the service as it operated during a defined period in late 2025.

Its network advertised 118 countries at the original comparison date and 150 countries at the October 2026 refresh — still the widest published country count of these three. The main constraint is its limit of 10 simultaneous connections. That is enough for many individuals and smaller households, but it can require device management in a home with many phones, computers, tablets, and streaming devices.

2. ExpressVPN — best documented architecture#

ExpressVPN’s central security feature is TrustedServer, an infrastructure design that runs the VPN server software in RAM and reloads a controlled software image during reboot. Its Lightway protocol is open source and has undergone multiple external reviews. The company also publishes audit work covering areas such as privacy-policy controls, server technology, applications, browser extensions, and routers.

ExpressVPN advertised 105 countries at the original comparison date and 113 countries at the October 2026 refresh. Its simultaneous-connection allowance depends on the selected subscription tier, with published limits of 10 or 14 devices as of the refresh. This is more flexible than a single fixed limit, but it also means buyers must compare the correct tier instead of assuming every subscription includes the highest allowance.

3. Surfshark — best for large households#

Surfshark supports WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2 where the platform allows it. Its published architecture includes RAM-only servers, a kill switch, private DNS, and options such as MultiHop. The provider has also commissioned external infrastructure and no-logs assessments. As with the other services, the useful question is what each review covered and when it occurred.

Surfshark advertised servers in 100 countries. Its decisive advantage is unlimited simultaneous connections, which removes the need to count household devices. Some security and identity features sit outside the base VPN package, so compare bundles by the features you will use rather than by the length of the feature list.

Protection and audit evidence#

All three services use modern encrypted tunnels and provide kill-switch controls on supported platforms. They also operate RAM-only VPN servers, which reduce persistent storage on the server itself. RAM-only design is valuable, but it does not replace secure application code, access controls, deployment practices, or an accurate privacy policy.

NordVPN has the strongest recent pattern of repeated no-logs assurance reviews. ExpressVPN provides the broadest public audit trail across its protocol, applications, and TrustedServer design. Surfshark supplies relevant third-party work, but buyers should still check the scope and date of each report rather than comparing audit counts alone.

Note

An audit gives assurance about a defined system, claim, and review period. It does not certify every future software release or eliminate the need to read the provider’s current privacy policy.

Speed and server coverage#

No provider can be declared universally fastest from architecture or country count alone. NordLynx and WireGuard-based connections are designed to reduce protocol overhead, while ExpressVPN’s Lightway is designed for quick connection changes and a compact implementation. Local routing can matter more than the protocol name.

As of the October 2026 refresh, NordVPN advertised coverage in 150 countries, ExpressVPN in 113, and Surfshark in 100 (118, 105, and 100 respectively at the original May 2026 comparison date). These figures describe geographic choice, not server capacity or speed. A nearby, lightly loaded server can perform better than a distant server from a provider with a larger global count.

Device limits#

Surfshark is the simple winner for device coverage because it permits unlimited simultaneous connections. This can reduce total cost for a family, shared household, or person with many connected devices.

NordVPN allows 10 simultaneous connections. ExpressVPN’s allowance varies by tier, with published limits of 10 or 14 as of the October 2026 refresh. Router installation can extend coverage for compatible devices, but router configuration has different management and performance tradeoffs from native apps.

Price and total subscription cost#

The checkout price is not the same as total ownership cost. Compare the full charge for the initial term, the renewal terms shown before payment, applicable taxes, included bundle features, and whether the device limit would force you to buy another subscription.

Surfshark usually has the clearest cost advantage for a large household because unlimited connections remove the second-subscription problem. NordVPN can offer better functional value when its specialty servers or bundled security tools replace another service you would otherwise buy. ExpressVPN’s tier system lets you choose a connection allowance, but you must compare like-for-like tiers and renewal conditions.

Tip

Save the checkout summary and renewal terms when you subscribe. Promotional terms, bundle contents, and renewal conditions can change after this article is published.

Support and refund policies#

All three providers advertise round-the-clock live-chat support and maintain self-service setup material. Support availability does not guarantee that every case will be resolved immediately, but live chat is useful when a connection or account problem prevents access to the service.

Each provider advertises a 30-day money-back period for eligible direct purchases. Purchases through an app store or another reseller can follow that seller’s rules instead. Read the applicable terms before payment, especially if you plan to rely on the refund period.

Which should you pick?#

Choose NordVPN if you want the best overall balance of recent no-logs assurance work, broad country coverage, specialty server options, and a modern WireGuard-based protocol.

Choose ExpressVPN if you value a clearly documented server architecture, extensive audit history, broad device support, and tiered connection allowances.

Choose Surfshark if your priority is protecting many devices without buying more than one subscription. Unlimited connections make it the most practical option for a large household.

Verdict#

NordVPN is our overall pick because it combines broad geographic coverage, repeated no-logs reviews, RAM-only infrastructure, and useful specialty connections. ExpressVPN is the stronger fit for buyers who place the most weight on published architecture and audit breadth. Surfshark offers the clearest household value when device count is the deciding factor.

Before purchasing, compare the complete subscription charge and renewal terms shown at checkout. Product bundles, network coverage, and policies can change.

Q & A

Frequently asked questions

01
Which VPN is best for the most devices?
Surfshark allows unlimited simultaneous connections. NordVPN permits 10, while ExpressVPN uses tier-dependent limits.
02
Have all three VPNs had independent audits?
Yes. Each provider has published independent assurance or security work, but the scope and date differ. An audit is evidence about specified controls at a particular time, not a permanent guarantee.
03
Which subscription offers the best value?
Surfshark is the clearest value choice for large households because one subscription covers unlimited devices. For any provider, compare the complete initial term, renewal conditions, included features, taxes, and refund rules.
