A good family antivirus plan must do more than stop malware on one computer. It needs enough licenses for the household, support for the devices children and adults use, practical parental controls, and clear tools for responding to exposed personal information.
Our ranking gives the most weight to documented device limits, parental-control coverage, identity features, platform support, and independent antivirus results available before publication. Bitdefender leads for broad family coverage, while McAfee is the stronger fit for households with an unusually large number of devices.

How we evaluated#
We compared the number of covered devices and family members, support for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Chromebooks, and whether parental controls work across those platforms. We also examined documented identity-monitoring features and whether important services require a higher subscription tier.
Malware protection was assessed through independent lab results rather than vendor claims. In AV-TEST's February 2026 Windows evaluation, Bitdefender (tested product: Total Security), McAfee (tested product: Total Protection), and Norton (tested product: Norton 360) received the maximum scores for protection, performance, and usability. ESET (tested product: Security Ultimate) received full protection and usability scores with a slightly lower performance score. Trend Micro (tested product: Internet Security) received full performance and usability scores but a lower protection score. Laboratories test a representative consumer product from each vendor's line, so these results describe the vendor's Windows engine rather than the exact family bundle reviewed here. The Windows results also do not prove identical performance on every operating system, and family features were ranked separately.
1. Bitdefender Family Pack — best overall coverage#
Bitdefender Family Pack combines a documented 15-device allowance with support for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. Its parental controls work across those platforms and include time limits, content filtering, location tools, and activity reports. That mix is more suitable for a device-heavy household than the five-device plans from Norton and Trend Micro. Bitdefender's tested consumer product (Total Security) also produced the strongest possible result in AV-TEST's February 2026 Windows evaluation.
The important limitation is availability. Bitdefender says Family Pack has been upgraded to its newer Total Security Family plan, which expands coverage to five members and 25 devices. Existing Family Pack users have a documented transition path, but new buyers should confirm which replacement plan is offered in their region. Family Pack's included VPN allowance is also too limited to replace a full household VPN subscription.
2. McAfee+ Premium Family — best for many devices#
McAfee+ Premium Family is the most accommodating option when a household has more devices than people. It covers unlimited compatible personal devices under the subscription terms and supports as many as six family members: two adults and four children under 18. Members receive separate accounts instead of sharing one login, while parents get controls intended to reduce children's online risk. Identity monitoring and alerts add value for adults, and McAfee's tested consumer product (Total Protection) achieved maximum scores across all three categories in AV-TEST's February 2026 Windows test.
The plan's identity and privacy tools need careful reading. Personal Data Cleanup and Online Account Cleanup are scan-only features at this tier, so they identify records without completing every removal task. The fixed split between adults and children may also be unsuitable for households with more than two adults.
3. Norton 360 Deluxe — best for smaller families#
Norton 360 Deluxe is a well-rounded choice when five licenses are sufficient. It protects PCs, Macs, phones, and tablets and combines antivirus with parental controls, a VPN, a password manager, dark web monitoring, and privacy monitoring. Norton 360 — the product line AV-TEST tested — also earned maximum protection, performance, and usability scores in the February 2026 Windows evaluation.
Its main weakness is capacity. Five licenses can disappear quickly when two adults and several children each use a computer and phone. Parental Control can protect a child's Windows, Android, or iOS device, but feature availability varies by platform and a child's Mac is not supported. Dark web monitoring can identify exposed information, but Deluxe does not include the broader credit and identity-restoration services found in Norton's LifeLock plans.
4. ESET HOME Security Premium — best for flexible licensing#
ESET HOME Security Premium lets buyers select a device count instead of forcing every household into one fixed bundle. The ESET HOME service provides centralized device management, while the Premium plan adds encryption, a VPN, and cloud-based analysis of suspicious files. ESET's tested consumer product (Security Ultimate) received full protection and usability scores for its Windows security engine in AV-TEST's February 2026 evaluation, with a slightly lower performance score.
ESET is less balanced as a family suite. Its feature list places parental controls on Windows, while ESET's dedicated parental-control product is for Android. Mac and iPhone households therefore receive less consistent family-control coverage than they would from Bitdefender. Premium also does not include ESET's Identity Protection service; that feature belongs to the Ultimate tier.
5. Trend Micro Maximum Security — best for Chromebook households#
Trend Micro Maximum Security protects up to five devices and supports Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Chromebook. Chromebook support distinguishes it from several conventional antivirus bundles, and the suite includes parental controls and a password manager. It can make sense for a small household whose children use ChromeOS devices.
It ranks fifth because its five-device limit is restrictive and its identity package is thin at this tier. Dark web monitoring and identity-restoration services are listed with Trend Micro's higher Premium Security Suite rather than Maximum Security. AV-TEST's February 2026 Windows result for Trend Micro's tested consumer product (Internet Security) also showed a clear gap in protection compared with Bitdefender, McAfee, Norton, and ESET, even though its performance and usability scores remained strong.
Verdict#
Bitdefender Family Pack is our first choice for its 15-device coverage, cross-platform parental controls, and strong independent protection results. Because Bitdefender is moving this product into newer family plans, buyers should follow the vendor's current upgrade offer and confirm the replacement plan's terms before subscribing.
McAfee+ Premium Family is the better choice when unlimited-device coverage and separate member accounts matter most. Norton 360 Deluxe is easier to justify for a smaller household that can remain within five devices. ESET suits Windows-centered families that want flexible licensing, while Trend Micro is mainly compelling when Chromebook support is essential.
FAQ#
Q & A
Frequently asked questions
- How many devices should a family antivirus plan cover?
- Count every supported computer, phone, and tablet that needs protection, then leave room for replacements or new devices. Five-device plans can suit small households, while larger families may need 15, 25, or unlimited-device coverage.
- Do family antivirus suites include parental controls?
- Some do, but the available controls vary by product and operating system. Check support for each child's device and confirm which features include content filtering, time limits, location tools, or activity reports.
- Does family antivirus replace identity-theft protection?
- No. Dark web or identity monitoring can alert you to exposed information, but it does not automatically provide credit monitoring, restoration services, insurance, or reimbursement. Those benefits usually require a separate feature or higher plan.
